Its seems that lately our team has been doing more and more work in the arena of organic design. I don’t mean “green” design although we also do quite a bit of that as well. What we call organic design is something that looks like this product we are working on, the Jellypod.

To us, an organic design is one that is based on tangent curves and flowing surfaces. As you can imagine, this sort of design can be quite difficult even with the incredible software and technology we have at our firm. At the end of the day it still comes down to math, lots of it. Even though our design software shields us from the unseen world of computations involved in creating a complex surface, the burden to define every aspect of a shape is still on us as designers. Computer aided design has come a long way in the last decade but it is still not as automated as you might think. Software has its limitations and bugs and organic modeling tasks seem to bring them all out to play.
Hopefully one day soon technology will be as powerful as in the hit movie Iron Man where Tony Stark uses a holographic interface to design his machines. He merely conveys intent with the flick of his wrist and a complex assembly is created, perfectly engineered. I look with expectation to the future when we see the gap between what is imagined and what is created made smaller and engineering becomes even more of an art form… until then, we will continue to pursue those designs that we see in our minds eye, even if it means that math and art still need a mediator in order to bring a product into the market.

Welcome to our new website! We are thrilled that you took the time to stop by and have a look around!
I would like to say thank you to our friends over at Digital Branch design for helping us bring this site to life, it was a lot of fun working with you on this.
We will be blogging about all manner of things here so feel free to bookmark this site and check back every week or so. If you have a suggestion for something we should write about please let us know, we will gladly share our thoughts on anything related to design and innovation.
